A Thousand Paper Cranes

Being the month of august there are so many important events and dates....August 6th and 9th are the Hiroshima and Nagasaki peace days...
The world was on a high of the new technology and weapons...no one knew the destructive power that they so badly seeked to control and conquer...
This is one of the stories that really touched my heart....
It is the story of a girl and a thousand paper cranes....
A story of believing and hoping for a new day even amidst all the horror and pain after the destruction that took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki...
Sadako Sasaki was only two years old when Hiroshima was destroyed. Her house was only a mile away from the epicenter of the blast. Her mother found her at home and took her to saftely. Everything was fine for this girl who had now turned twelve and loved running and had even won several trophies. Life had started to resume after the disaster but many were suffering. Whaat started out as a fainting spell for Sadako soon followed up with purple bruises all over her legs and body.

She was diagnosed with leukemia and was given a year to live. During one of the hospital visits, one of her friends brought her a square, golden piece of paper and folded into a beautiful paper crane (a symbol of good luck and peace). She saw many others being gifted paper cranes also and became curious as to what these cranes symbolized. According to the story, a person who folded a thousand paper cranes would be granted their hearts desire. Sadako, inspired by the story began to fold paper cranes with whatever little pieces of paper she found such as medicine wrappers, hoping for recovery and to return to her friends and family.

As the days passed her condtion and the condition of those in the hospital just like her worsened and she began to understand that she might not survive. She began to wish instead now for peace and hope to reign in the world so that nothing like this would ever happen again and no one would ever have to suffer again. Some versions of the story say that she indeed completed a thousand cranes and continued to fold more for others. Another version says that she never made it past 644 cranes and that her friends continued making the 1000 paper craned and sealed it in the coffin with her.

After her death her friends and family raised funds to build a memorial for her and in 1958 a statue of Sadako holding a golden paper crane was unveiled at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. She gave hope to many others and every year people gather to make thousands more of the paper cranes and string them around the memorial praying and hoping for peace in the world.

My very 1st blog!!!!

I started this blog because I became interested in blogging after viewing my friend's blog. At first I wasn't sure what kind of blog i would create. It took me a while just staring at the computer and the blank 'compose' screen to realize i could blog about anything i wanted. It didn't have to be anything spectacular, just something i found interesting, something that i loved. What do i love? I love anything poetic, artistic, romantic, inspirational, crazy....anything that makes me feel like - this is a part of me...
I'm one of those people who thrives on living life based on what i feel is right and what i feel is right in my heart. It's not always a good thing, i have been advised, but hey,it's much better than that person out there who hasn't experienced the feeling of choosing to do something they love even though they might fail. Knowing that i choose to do whatever my heart says, what ever i feel at the moment, impulsive and immature as it may sound seems like a much better way to live than to always be practical (even though being practical is a requirement).
Anyway, this blog will hopefully be helpful, inspiring and maybe even i will learn a few things....and as the blog is named- I only believe in this:
"To thine own self be true" - I swear there is no better way to live :)
